I am interested in the processes that bring about biological and cultural diversity in birds, particularly those linked to signaling traits such as song. For my DPhil, I am studying geographic and individual variation in the song of silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) as well as other species in the Zosteropidae genus. I am utilising a combination of traditional approaches, machine learning and field techniques to reveal fine-scale differences in song between populations and test for behavioural patterns. This data has the potential to elucidate the interplay between song dialects and speciation, strengthening our understanding of species complexes and island divergence patterns. These findings can also help to inform practices of bioacoustic monitoring in species with high levels of vocal variation.
