All my research interests revolve around evolutionary biology. For my DPhil project, I intend to combine molecular and fossil data to investigate why certain oak species in western Mexico – based on macrofossil evidence currently under study – appear to have adapted better to post-Pleistocene environmental conditions than others. In particular, I aim to explore some of the molecular basis of ecological adaptation in species that potentially colonised natural areas in the westernmost part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (such as Sierra La Primavera) after the Pleistocene, as well as the molecular basis of ecological adaptation in species that are less represented today than they were during the Pleistocene in these natural areas. To this end, I plan to use whole-genome data from various geographical regions, accounting for relevant environmental gradients and, where applicable, the potential role of adaptation via introgression.
