I’m a microbiologist working to understand and engineer interactions between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and plants, with the aim of reducing our reliance on nitrogen fertilisers and developing more sustainable ways to grow crops.
I completed my PhD at the University of Oxford, where I studied the genetic factors that shape how symbiotic rhizobia colonise plant roots and form nitrogen-fixing nodules. As a postdoctoral researcher, I’ve continued to explore how these bacteria interact with their hosts, including how they transition between symbiotic and free-living lifestyles. I’m currently working on the EEBio project, engineering free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria to respond to signals produced by plants and compete more effectively to colonise plant roots.
