Department of Biology welcomes a new Head of Department

The Department of Biology opens a new chapter as we extend our heartfelt thanks to Mark and Tim for their exceptional leadership during their time as joint Heads of Department, and welcome Martin Maiden as our new Head of Department. Under Mark and Tim's leadership, the department has seen remarkable growth, including the successful merger of the Plant Sciences and Zoology departments and the construction of the state-of-the-art Life and Mind Building.  We are fortunate to continue benefiting from their expertise as they remain valued members of our community.  Below, you can read their reflections on this transition as well as Martin’s vision for the department.

From Mark and Tim

As we step down as joint Heads of the Department of Biology, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude and reflect on what has been an extraordinary journey over the past few years. When we began this role, the merger of the Departments of Plant Sciences and Zoology into a new, unified Department of Biology was a daunting task. Yet, thanks to the hard work, collaboration, and resilience of each and every member of the department, we have not only made this vision a reality but have also seen the department grow into a thriving and dynamic hub of research and education. It has been our honour to help shape this new department and to work alongside such talented colleagues throughout this time of change.

One of the most exciting projects we had the privilege of overseeing was the design and construction of the Life and Mind Building. From early planning meetings to the final stages of development, it has been incredible to witness this state-of-the-art facility take shape — a space that we believe will foster collaboration and innovation for generations of scientists to come.

We also extend heartfelt thanks to E.J., who generously stepped in as Interim Head of Department during Tim’s sabbatical year. E.J.’s leadership and dedication during this time were instrumental in ensuring a successful merger,. We are deeply appreciative of your support and the steady hand with which you guided the department during that period.

As we pass the baton to the new Head of Department, we are confident that the future is bright for Biology. The foundation has been laid, and the opportunities for growth and discovery are endless. We are excited to see where the next chapter will take this department and look forward to watching all of you continue to achieve great things.

From Martin

It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I step into the role of Head of the Department of Biology. I am both humbled and inspired by the opportunity to build on the exceptional work of my predecessors, Mark and Tim, whose leadership has guided us through a period of profound transformation. The merger of Plant Sciences and Zoology into our new department and the realisation of the Life and Mind Building are notable achievements. I am grateful to them, and to E.J., who provided invaluable leadership during Tim’s sabbatical, for laying the strong foundation upon which we now stand.

Looking ahead, our shared purpose is clear: to undertake outstanding biological research and education. This dual commitment is at the heart of our department, where teaching and research enrich each other. This is exemplified by  the new four-year degree program, which realises  this synergy. In our pursuit of academic excellence, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to creative, curiosity-driven research that informs and inspires our teaching.

Our people are the most important asset we have and it is my responsibility  to ensure that everyone has the mentorship, training, and resources they need to thrive. Diversity is a strength, and it is crucial that we continue to cultivate an inclusive, supportive, and welcoming environment where every role is valued and every individual is empowered to reach their potential.

Collaboration lies at the heart of scientific progress, and fostering strong partnerships within and beyond our department will be a key. Whether through interdisciplinary projects like our new research strategy or by leveraging our connections with Colleges, other University Departments, and international institutions, working together will allow us to achieve far more than we could alone.

Finally, I am committed to ensuring that our department has a global perspective. Our research and education should not only advance knowledge but also contribute to addressing the challenges faced by society today. By equipping our students with a world-class education and generating research that informs real-world solutions, we have a responsibility to ensure our work reaches beyond the university and makes a positive impact on the world.

I am confident about the future of this department and look forward to working alongside my wonderful colleagues as we embark on this next chapter. Together, we shall achieve great impact, by building on our strengths and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead.
