I am interested in plant-pathogen interactions and plant synthetic biology, with a specific focus on plant-based transgenic protein production, also known as “Molecular Pharming”. My DPhil project aims to identify and optimise alternative non-model plant species for agroinfiltration-mediated transient protein expression. Through this project, I hope to expand the scope of plant-based protein expression beyond routinely used model species such as N. benthamiana, and widen public acceptance of agroinfiltration-based protein products. I will be taking an approach focused on profiling plant-bacteria interactions which may enable or hinder the capacity of in-planta protein production, with the aim to eliminate barriers that limit product yield. Through collaboration with my industry partner Kyomei, I hope to ultimately apply the optimised protocols to the production of sustainable food proteins in-planta at a commercial scale.
