My main research interests are microbial evolutionary genomics and antimicrobial resistance. I am currently working on a BBSRC project in collaboration with the University of Birmingham to understand the pathway to multidrug resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens. Little is known about the series of evolutionary events that underpin multidrug resistance acquisition, including potentiating and compensatory mutations that allow acquisition and maintenance of multidrug resistance genes or plasmids. To address these questions, I am combining comparative and functional genomics approaches to characterize the evolutionary events and genetic changes that underpin the emergence and spread of pandemic MDR E. coli.
