My research interests mainly focus on ocean pollution, particularly the accumulation and transport of microplastics in marine systems, and their effects on marine animals. Currently I am working on multi-partner project which aims to highlight the extent of microplastic pollution in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. We are hoping to achieve this by identifying the types of microplastic pollution in a range of samples including water, ice cores, aerosols, and seabed sediment. From this we hope to highlight the potential sources of this pollution. My previous projects include the accumulation of microplastics in marine systems such as the Irish Sea and Antarctic deep-sea, the effects of microplastic exposure on crustacean feeding and other essential survival behaviours, the impact and control of invasive species in aquatic systems, and the reproductive biology of key UK fishery species.
