Research Interests

I am interested in understanding the drivers of diversification in birds.

For my DPhil, I am trying to provide a mechanistic answer to the “paradox of the great speciators”, an evolutionary puzzle proposed by Jared Diamond and Ernst Mayr in the 1970s. The role that dispersal has in promoting diversification over wide geographical areas is key for resolving this paradox. I am focusing on studying the dispersal of two groups of South Pacific birds that are particularly diverse: white-eyes (Zosterops spp.) and honeyeaters (Myzomela spp.).

I use a combination of field, computational and genomic approaches.

I studied Biology at the University of Oviedo (2013-2017) and did an MRes in Biological Sciences at Durham University (2018-2019). I worked at the Max Planck Institute and the Institute of Science and Technology, Austria before joining the Clegg Lab in 2019.
