Professor Martin Maiden, Head of Department says of the positions
This is a pivotal moment for Oxford Biology. These new posts will allow us to appoint outstanding researchers and teachers in plant sciences, animal behaviour, and molecular cell biology, strengthening our department’s breadth and impact. As we move into our new state-of-the-art building, the successful candidates will be at the heart of shaping our future research environment and inspiring the next generation of biologists.
In partnership with The Queen’s College, Oxford, the Department is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor (or Professor) in Plant Sciences. The appointee will bring fresh perspectives to molecular plant biology, with potential areas of research including plant physiology, photosynthesis, and plant cell biology. The successful candidate will establish or maintain an independent research group, secure external funding, and provide high-quality teaching across lectures, practical classes, and tutorials.
In partnership with Merton College, Oxford, the Department is recruiting an Associate Professor of Animal Behaviour. The role calls for an innovative researcher working in areas such as animal cognition; neuroscience; molecular (e.g. genomics, post-genomics, epigenetics) and or physiological mechanisms underpinning behaviour (e.g. neurophysiology, metabolism. The post holder will build a thriving research programme and teach animal behaviour and biology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including tutorials at Merton College.
In partnership with Keble College, Oxford, the Department is also seeking an Associate Professor of Molecular Cell Biology. Topics of research interest might include, but are not restricted to, genome stability, DNA repair and replication, stem cell biology, ageing and senescence, cell cycle, and other fundamental cellular mechanisms in an organismal context.. The successful candidate will establish or maintain an independent research group, secure competitive grant funding, and contribute to teaching across the Department and Keble College.
These appointments come at a particularly exciting time for the Department of Biology, which is in the process of relocating to a new, state-of-the-art building. The facility will provide world-class research laboratories, modern teaching spaces, and opportunities for enhanced collaboration across disciplines. Applications for all posts must be made online by their respective deadlines in autumn 2025. Further details, including application instructions, are available via the University of Oxford’s recruitment portal.
