The Weldon Memorial Prize Board of Electors, chaired by Professor Tim Coulson, unanimously agreed to award Angela McLean the 2018 Weldon Memorial Prize.
The remit of the prize is to “award without regard to nationality or membership of any University to the person who, in the judgement of the electors, has, in the ten years next preceding the date of the award, published the most noteworthy contribution to the development of mathematical or statistical methods applied to problems in Biology (Biology shall, be interpreted as including Zoology, Botany, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, and Medical Science)”.
This prize is named in honour of Professor Walter Frank Raphael Weldon, former Linacre Professor of Zoology at the University. It was established through the efforts of Francis Galton and Karl Pearson to perpetuate the memory of Professor Weldon and to encourage Biometric Science. The prizewinner receives a medal and is invited to give a lecture followed by a dinner in college that enables them to meet with the Weldon Electors and other Oxford Researchers. Angela will be giving her Weldon Memorial Prize Lecture on Monday, 22 October 2018 at 4pm in the Oxford Martin School Lecture theatre, followed by a formal dinner in Jesus College.
