The Animal Vibration Lab aims to understand how animals can use vibrations for biological information. We study diverse animals across different scales, from spiders to elephants, using a range of approaches from lab-based experiments to fieldwork. We investigate the mechanisms animals use to generate and detect vibrations, how the physical environment impacts this and the implications for understanding mechanical sensing more broadly. We explore the applications of this research in terms of bioinspired vibration sensors within engineering, as well as remote monitoring of animal behaviour for conservation and agriculture.
